On 29th May 1997 Jeff Buckley left the world and he would have been 55 years old. In 2021, the world remembered him with sadness and grief again.

His Early Life and Its Impacts
He was born in the USA and he became a songwriter, singer ,and composer. His biological father was Tim Buckley who was known as a popular folk-rock musician in the 60’s. Tim Buckley abandoned Jeff when he was a six-month baby. Jeff did not know his biological father until he was six years old. This brought an emptiness in Jeff’s heart, which was not filled up again. It is known that infants generally experience separation anxiety between the ages of 6 months and 3 years old and this is a normal developmental process.

In Jeff’s life, he was abandoned by his father when he was six months, and this shows that he experienced this at a critical time which separation anxiety starts. Ben Spencer explains that growing up without a father figure can permanently change the structure of a mind. Thus, the importance of a father in child development could be seen. Also, it is found that children who are abandoned by their fathers tend to become depressed more than other children. In Jeff’s lyrics, we can clearly see the depressive mood when we read them.
“This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die.,
But it’s over
Just hear this and then I’ll go:
You gave me more to live for more than you’ll ever know.”

Jeff Buckley lived with his mother and stepfather. They moved from one place to another place. This constant moving situation made him feel that he did not belong to anywhere and this is known as monachopsis. After a while, when Jeff became six years old, his mother talked about Tim Buckley by making him listen to one of Tim Buckley’s songs. At the age of eight, Jeff saw Tim Buckley for the first time. After the meeting, Tim Buckley passed away due to overdose. Tim was dead but some of the things in Jeff such as mimics and face remind of Tim Buckley. Most people compare him with his biological father Tim Buckley and this comparison increased his anger toward Tim.

Finding the Tranquility in Music
For him, music was a vehicle for the expression of his inner feelings. Her mother’s music interest directed him. He was trying to play guitar by listening to some legendary rock bands such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin while he was a child. The first album he bought was Led Zeppelin’s Physical Grafitti. He decided to become a musician and he started giving performances during his music education. In addition, his turning point in his life was to meet Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who was a Pakistani musician. He became Jeff’s role model and his music and lyrics impressed him. He began writing his own song with his friend Gary Lucas and released the first album named “Grace”. His music interpretation and voice were definitely different from Tim Buckley’s. This is exactly what he wanted to achieve because he did not want to be known as Tim Buckley’s son.

He covered some popular songs such as “I Know It’s Over” by The Smiths, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, and “Lilac Wine” by Nina Simone. He made different and unique interpretations in each song. To me, the most fitting cover song for Jeff Buckley’s life is “I Know It’s Over” because this is a song that tells the pain deeply.
“Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head.”
Jeff had a struggle for existence. He tried to find his place in the world where he was abandoned. He loved and also he was loved by countless people, but it was not enough for him because no love was able to fill his emptiness. He did not want to become popular because he did not belong to the reputation world. For this reason, before he died, he made a job application as a butterfly watchman in a zoo.

The World Sleeping The Boy Drowning
Jeff Buckley went to Memphis to start making his new album workings. He sang one of his favorite songs “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin and after this, he jumped into the water. No one knows whether it was a suicide or not and no one will ever know this. However, it is known that he was not drunk and did not take any drugs when he did this. His dead body was not found for six days. On 29th May, Jeff was drowned in the water while he was already drowning in the world when he was alive. The world did not hear his cry, but he found himself in the water in silence with his dreams and pain.
